I wondered if anyone can help. this is my first Morris Minor 1000 (well first classic car.)
I am having issues with my fuel pump, when i am driving i can hear the pump ticking about every second but every so often it will tick about twice every second is this correct.
Also a couple of times its stopped ticking and guess what i stopped to
But a tap with the hammer and a way we go again.
Also should the pump stop ticking with the carb if full as mine ticks all the time.
Any experience would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Danny

You might find this thread useful as Sidney61 had a similar problem:

It should stop ticking when the carb is full - although carb may leak - and it should NOT 'stop dead!'. Clean the points - and order a spare set.

It shouldn't really tick at all if the carb is full, mine used to tick about every 4 secs but is now perfectly quiet with ign on/engine off after fitting a new float needle and seat from esm.
My car conked out the once and i discovered that the old needle had jammed in the housing, which I did not think was possible given that my pump is pushing fuel at it and at a decent rate. Cured at the roadside by filing the nylon sides of the float needle down a bit with sandpaper, then ordered replacement later. An odd problem as the needle sometimes stuck and sometimes let a bit too much through.
It's probably the pump but thought this was worth mentioning

Hi, when I had the problem I resolved it by building a new one from three dodgy old ones! obviously not everybody has that luxury. Though I do still have a dodgy clicky one on the other car which ends up flooding the float after a few minutes!
I believe the problem is cause by the diaphragm rather than the points, it may first of all be worth unscrewing the pump (the 6 screws around the outside) and rotating the diaphragm a few times (the diaphragm is connected to the points part of the pump, if that makes sense) and seeing if that makes a difference.
The way I tested it was to connect the pump to a battery charger, it should click away very fast, then if you put your finger over the fuel out nozzle (the long thin one) it should stop clicking, if it is still clicking when blocked up then a new diaphragm is probably needed.
Hope this helps
