Engine Oil - Two Questions

I have now done approx 250 miles in my Series II after her complete rebuild. The engine was fully stripped and rebuilt by an excellent engine reconditioning firm here with all new rings, bearings etc. I then did the final assembly, fitted new oil filter, mated to gearbox, fitted to car etc. I have two questions.

When should I perform the first oil change? Was thinking after the first 500 miles, and also fit new oil filter in order to catch any nasties from the initial running in period.

Also, why is my oil black already? In my modern car when it was new the oil stayed nice and light brown for 1,000's of miles. As this is virtually a new engine why is the oil going black so quickly?

The first oil change is recommended at 500 miles when running in a recon engine. I can't answer why your oil is black though - mine is still almost clear after 400 miles.

Ask the chap who reconditioned it. If he's that good he should answer honestly and address any of your fears.

My Trav's oil is still clear after many thousands of miles! I suggest the engine/sump was not cleaned out properly - and/or there is blow-by into the sump past the rings. Black = carbon. Change the oil now - after a good hard run, while the oil is hot - and then see what happens to the next lot!

The engine was certainly very clean. The reconditioners assembled pistons, crank, bearings etc and I did the final assembly. From memory it was spotless.

I'll do an oil change at 500 and then check again. Cheers
