Magnetic power generators....

Has anyone else looked into these? I've been browsing around and seen a set of plans for building what is claimed to be a generator that drives itself using 12 opposed magnets. It gives out 3.5 volts at 7 amps, they say. You are informed that you will need an inverter to change the DC to AC, but no details on how to set this up.
Further, the generator needs to be run at 2,400rpm for 42 seconds to get it 'loaded up' and running by itself. Again, no info on how to achieve this, except a line about your needing to mount the rotor with a brass bush! I'm sure you wouldn't be able to do this by hand without incorporating a complex gearing system. And the whole thing would need to be well balanced.
So, sketchy at best. But there are a lot of sites on this subject, so I thought I'd ask here before dismissing it all as spoofery. These generators are the way forward, many claim.
