I found this old postcard in a car bootsale the last weekend....I think the registrations on the vans are SLM 556 and DXN 105.....and the stamp was franked on 23. JY. 62

The shop behind may have been an outfitter as the sign says something like ' Frazers of Perth'

Nice.
I like the GPO van with its noddy front lights. You never see these about other than the odd show.

Wow.. That is cool. I love those before and after pictures. Now all you need is two vans to recreate the postcard

Postcard.

What a tasty find, looks like SLM 154 and 0XN 105, there are surviving examples of both. Thanks for sharing such a great period picture.

Trying to get a Picture of the OXN Royal Mail job, it's rather like a Weetabix, but stored for restoration one day, the other is SLM 176, Russell might have picture of it restored ? I have one as it was found, but will need to scan it and then put it on.
Hang on in there . Just love these GPO Jobs! Where's this new thread ?
Hi, what wheels have you got on the van?

les,
Hi Les , the front ones are the proper van type and I think that the rear are called 'J Rims' from around the 1970sas the guy who had it before me fitted them and he had the van for a long time .

Getting back to the original postcard and the Rubber Winged Postal van. I am trying to make up a list of surviving GPO postal and telephone vans with Rubber Wings. I own one postal van and two telephone enginers vans which are in various stages of restoration. I believe there are four postal vans and about ten telephones vans surviving. If you have one of these rare vans please contact me with your vans details so I can add it to the list. The van pictured is the only postal van that has been restored so far.
A member of the Rugby branch has a concourse rubber winged GPO van, it is the one pictured in Ray Newells 'original Morris Minor'.

VERY nice....(although better with white tyre pressures!!)
This cab/body is original...whereas the cab of the other restored ex-Newcastle (SGH 396) is from a later SLM - !
Technically making SLM 176's cab the 2nd oldest Mailvan cab restored - no idea what's happened to SGH 349..any ideas?
Thanks for the pic...nice to see them restored properly - numberplate on the bumper is a nice touch too, very 'as it was in GPO service'.....Great.....
SLM 175 HpMr York
SLM 176 " Newcastle
SLM 177 " Ipswich
