I recently asked for help regarding breakdown after several miles, forgot to mention battery would go flat, but now have put new alternator on, i thought it could have been coil , but member replied its never the coil, anyway as mentioned before, car electronic ignition, so no points, no condenser, car has new petrol pump and ticks over as normal,no rush of air to and from tank, have no problem when cold only after several miles, have also ckecked carb and thats ok,but prior to fitting new alternator, the dash red light would flicker on and off, and after about 10 miles would not have enough power to restart, so thats why i thinking its an electrical fault possibly, have had several moggies over years, have never come across this before, please any help would be great, thanks

Have you checked if the alternator is actually charging?

Put a multimeter across the battery with the engine stopped. Check voltage. Start car, check voltage again. With engine running, volts should be about 13.4

Well it could be the coil, you know... Especially if it's been moved to a vertical position on the bulkhead or inner wing to facilitate the fitment of the alternator.

If the coil is overheating, then the spark will break down and the car will stop. Might be worth trying a new coil - in any case, it's often good to have a spare. :)
