Just put a Mini 1248 tpm speedo into the car as I'm running a 3.7 diff. Speedo spot on according to my hand held GPS, no problem there. But....the mini speedo had wider mounting "ears" than the Morris one so I assembled the mini innards in the minor case. All the charging, oil pressure, main beam lights work fine, but there is a lot of overspill of light from the speedo illumination bulbs at night which really does make the warning lights glow quite a bit, particularly the ones nearest the light bulbs - i.e. the 2 amber ones.
Wondering what the best way round this is?

That's what the inst. panel light switch is for
There should be shields around the panel lights. Can you post a couple of photos of the two speedos for comparison?
Just checking my speedo chart, is the serial no. SN4421/00SA?

did you refit the little rubber shields around the warning lights?

Er....don't remember any rubber shields at all mogwai will check tomorrow. But the old minor speedo didn't have the problem.

Never got the point of the panel light switch as you can't see how fast you are going in the dark, am I missing something here? Never ever use it. Yes mike that is indeed the speedo number

I've played with this on mine as well - I fitted a later model speedo innards, in the case of a gold faced one. There were two types of covers/shrouds stopping instrument light leakage via the warning light lenses:

One was a sort of cup arrangement with a concertina step in it which surrounded the bulb holder

The other was a little rubber tube which pushed over the inside of the warning lens itself.

I checked several speedos in my collection and almost all had perished.

You could probably replace the cup type ones with something like thin inner tube or wide heat shrink tube. Heat shrink is perfect for the smaller ones on the lens' themselves. Electrical tape will do at a pinch.

I'm still having issues with light leaking through the sides of the odo aperture. That's a job for another day.

Never ever use it.

Niether does anyone else. Morris could have saved about 2 shillings per car by not fitting it.

Hmm took it to bits again and no sign of any rubbers anywhere - found a spare set of engine steady rubbers - only thing I can find for now and must use the car tomorrow - placed them on the bottom 4 warning lights - clamped it all up will see how it works this evening. Didn't glue them on as they clamp up nicely anyway<br><br>

My Mini speedo had rubber boots on - and I just bent/trimmed/drilled the brackets to fit! The 1248 speedo is exactly right with 3.7 diff - probably more so than original speedo which was always about 5% optimistic to help disguise how slow the car is ! We won our class on recent 'Regularity run' - with a clean sheet for perfect time keeping, relying on the accuracy of the speedo and mileometer to keep us right. And last week-end - on the RSAC 3 Lochs run - the mileometer also complied exactly with all the mileages given in the route instructions.

Yes bmc I was staggered how accurate it now seems when checked against a handheld gps, really there seems nothing in it. I suppose I could do the same with the brackets too as you have done and use the mini speedo complete. I was a bit reluctant to bend anything about before I had seen whether the speedo conversion was ok first.

These little rubbers have done the trick however, it works great. I may put an extra repeater for the winkers in the top green bulb as my Mountney wheel obscures the green globe on the indicator stalk.

Yes - it's a lucky find - getting a Mini speedo which looks almopst exactly like the Minor speedo (as you say - extra green warning lamp to play with!) and with exactly the required tpm for 3.7 diff. And mine cost less than £6 - including the postage! Dunno if there is one to match the 3.9 diff - has anyone found one ? It would have to be something like 1304 or thereabouts.
