unknown knob found!

Hello,
Please forgive my naiivity - despite a moggy being in our family for decades, I never took a huge amount of notice of the hidden workings, but this morning I, very exitedly, collected my very own moggy. There are a few niggles, but nothing we can't source and fix ourselves, but I have a query regarding a strange knob I found lurking in the shadows.
In the are under the steering wheel, near the bonnet pull and almost flush to the wall to the engine bay, is a small black knob with a red dot on it. I cannot for the life of me fathom what it is for and was hoping that someone would be able to help me.
I inherited a partial copy of a 1975 Haynes manual with the car but cannot find it in there.
If you can help me unravel this mystery I would be most grateful!

. What year is your car? I don't know much about early cars but I've never seen a knob like that on a later car. Is it possibly a type of after market engine cut out put there for security? If you look in the engine bay can you see if anything comes out that side such as a wire etc?
