Hello Folks

Just Got me a spare engine for bluey.

My current engine is a 10ME engine (1069)

My spare engine is a 10MA engine (196?)

What are the differences between the two the only thing i can see is that it has an open breather system not a closed circuit type on the 10me

The "10 M" bit means its a 1098 Morris engine (10 A would have been Austin for example) the second letter is the type. They started with A and changed with modifications over the years so an "A" engine is older than an "E" engine. I'm not aware of any date record for engine types though but a 10MA would have to be around 1962 as it was the first year the 1098 went into the Moggie....

According to the attached they are both series 5 engines and the only difference is that a 10 me engine has a closed circuit breather.

Of course they would both have to be Series 5 engines as the 1098 was only available from Series 5 onwards.....

Is it better to convert it to closed circuit breathing.

All i can think about is our poor motorcycle friends and the oil dripping from the breather pipe down to the road.

Open breather may help keep the underneath rust free

It's better to have the engine draw in air through one open breather - to keep down moisture ( = mayo!) in the rocker cover. One breather MUST be connected to the carb inlet pipe.
