I think the lesson learned is to get another key!

I'm having a dig around to see what I can find out for you. I'm guessing you have house keys at the mo so it doesn't need to be fixed tonight? But you need it for work tomorrow? (late shift again?)

Stumped. Sorry. From what I can tell theres no way other than smashing a light unit.

Might be worth a call to an auto locksmith in the morning

Found this on the MX5 forum
http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/t/7865.aspx

If you have an import Mk 1(not sure if this works on an mx-5 or Mk 2) take the back inner boot panel off and your rear Number plate(this is something i have done on the early cars without a boot release inside for customers over the years) find yourself a rubber grommet around 3/4 of an inch round or nearest to it.now look at the rear of your car where you have removed your number plate and you will see a dimple on your right, disconnect the lock rod from inside the back panel of the boot.now make sure you get the right dimple, now drill through using the correct drill for your rubber grommet, put some paint on and around the egdes of the hole so no rust reconnect the lock rod put your inner rear panel back on put your rubber grommet in refit your number plate, and no difference.now if you ever lock your keys in the boot all you need to do is remove nuber plate, take out rubber grommet and pull lock rod ,your boot will open, get your keys but everythng back start your car and go home

Thanks Jonathon, Useful information which I will file for future reference. On this occasion I upgraded my AA membership to Homestart for £35 - AA man came out and managed to prize open the boot both sides with a blow up pillow! Then could reach in from the top to undo the lock. Now I'm getting a spare key cut which will be £45 from the Mazda dealer - not too expensive :-) Won't be doing that again
