Replce the lock barrels in the door and ignition

This is my first post after recently becoming a member, and buying a 1958 Morris Minor 4 door saloon. (so I hope this request is posted in the correct place.)

Would anyone have any information on how to proceed with the above mentioned task..
Ive bought a Haynes Manual, but there is no mention of the locks in there as far as I can tell.

Hi Ken

welcome aboard..

this seems as good a place as any to post your question..

for the front door locks you will need to get the handles out of the doors.. this should be covered in the haynes manual.

with the lock in your hand, put the key in the lock.. this will move all the plates in. if you then examine the barrel about 1 cm away from the front where the key fits in you will see a little lock pin which pushes through the casing sits in a grove in the lock barrel. push the pin out at which point the barrel should be able to be pulled out of the casing. to put the barrel back you will need to put the key in the new barrel.


as for the ignition lock.. no idea i have not yet done it

You beat me to asking the question.

I need to change the door lock on my Trav but how do you get the handle out? Looks to me like I need to remove the window frame but I can't get a socket onto the bolts.

The window frame bolts are not central in the hole on the door and I can't get a spanner in. Anyone got any ideas or help?

if you are lucky and it is a big IF..

you only really need to take the part of the window frame that sits up against the "b" post not the area by the quarter light.

undoing the bolts in the door frame is easy but the fun bit it is undoing the two small screws which hold the frame upright and the frame horizontal together.. if you can get them apart they are small and do rust you can then wiggle out the glass, then the frame upright and you can then get at your lock..

I hope that is clear.. i fear it is not

I replaced mine last year but I did take the frame out. The trickiest bit was getting the two nuts below the quarter light off. I used a deep 1/4" drive thin walled socket with a 1/4" universal joint and a little extension bar. I think it was a 12mm socket. It is also a bit of a fiddle to get the lock out. Then you have to remove the barrel see Haynes page 157. There is a tiny pin that has to be driven out which was hard to see as it was covered with gunge and not shown in the Haynes manual. If you do remove the frame I would replace all the window seals while you are at it. Use the modern touch glass ones on the outside, felt on the inside and seal off any remaining gaps with silicone. Also a good oppertunity to waxoil the inside of the door. Mine was full of all sorts of debris blocking the drainage holes but luckily no rust!
Before removing any nuts or bolts on the inside of the door, stuff the bottom of the door with old rags or towels. Anything that drops down can be very difficult to retrieve-keep a magnet on some flexible tubing handy.
The ignition is easy. Disconnect the battery. There is a notched ring-see photo below which can be tapped off carefully with a screw driver-but watch the paint on the dash in case it slips. Remove the speedo for access. I think the barrel is simply held in by a screw.<br>Image<br>
