I've just realised that my coil is mark with 1 and 15 not - and + .
Anyone know which is which?
I think I'd assumed the 1 was a -

Very strange ! How old (or new!) is it?

I've had coils on cars marked that way, years ago though so can't remember. But if it works leave it be!

The negative wire from the coil goes to the distributor, in a negative-grounded system.....cream with a black tracer stripe on mine.
I too remember a coil with odd markings like yours - a dim and distant memory now, though

Sounds like a Bosch coil. If so, 1 = Negative and 15 = positive.

I don't doubt you are correct LM - but how do you know that ?

Probably the same way that you know the things that you do

No idea how old the coil is, it was on the car when I got it.
Hopefully LouiseM is right and I'd connected right using more luck than judgement :) .
The other thing I can tell you is the plastic part isn't black, it's dark red/brown.

Definately a Bosch coil then in that case....

I'm sure now that my previous post was of no use......reading subsequent posts it seems that you didn't have the coil disconnected, but just noticed the markings. But even if you'd had the coil off, my post wouldn't have helped  .

No worries, it's the thought that counts :) .

The terminal numberings are a DIN standard commonly used on Bosch components to identify the type of circuit. 30 would be a live feed from battery. 15 ignition feed etc

Perfect answer. Most car companies use 1,15 and 30.

As I'm in Fishbourne, I now know who to ask when I have an electrical fault

Not heard of this DIN standard - seems strange nobody else uses it - if it's a 'standard' ! But thanks for the info - another good reason to avoid Bosch !

the most common usage is on relays. pull one out of a modern it should have the pins marked somthing like 30, 87,85, 86
