Backlash?

Hi folks!
I was wondering if anyone could help with a little problem i'm having.
When i pull away and change gear when accelerating/deccelerating there is a rather loud clonk coming from the back end.
Now...the diff has what i would call a fair bit of backlash in it and i was curious if this could be the culprit.
It is a metallic clunk, not a scrape/rub and it doesnt sound like a knock as if something is loose.
Any ideas my friends?

Could be half-shaft about to snap - or free-play in the prop shaft - or the axle casing twisting in the U bolts - or just the nut securing the input shaft to the diff come loose! Or maybe - worn/damaged bushings in the rear spring mounts allowing the springs to move ?

Alright roy calm down! Its tooearly to be giving me a heart attack.
I am cautiously optimistic that it isnt the shafts about to snap, ive replaced the rubber mounts for the axle and the springs are all poly bushed.
The prop can be turned by hand further than i would think is normal(i thought that was backlash?)

Well, if you will run silly motors you'll have problems.
Get it to a SADMOG and you will soon have a diagnosis.....
Does sound like a diff problem to me.

I know! Hey ho, it was worth it! It doesnt sound nice but certainly not terminal so i shall sadmog it soon!

I had similar concerns with clunks some while back, and considered there to be a lot of backlash in the diff, however that was a reddish herring, as the problem was loose u bolts. It is well worth checking them as they do settle.
Failing that, I reckon a big lump of the floorpan has fractured away around the front spring mount and is at this very moment about to let the leaf spring dig into the road, thus catapulting you in a neat cartwheel!

well i have say kudos to Mr Audio, Roy you disappoint me!
and no! the diff is not off yet. i have done so much disassembly and reassembly over the last couple of months that i am going to let it run for a bit. True, the diff can be done in a very short space of time, but when i do that i will change the wheel studs at the same time, thus making it a more time consuming adventure!
