Car Dipper

Evenin all

I'm thinking of getting the SII Acid dipped and then blown over in primer - just so that I know exactly what I will have to deal with. Anyone know somewhere in the hants/wilts/dorset/berks area that can do it?

And I know you will pop up and comment on e-coating Jonno, and I am intending (finances permitting) to get that done too

We have a car going into SPL soon and are going for an initial acid dip which is then passivated and left bare, all welding will be done then the car returned and re dipped and finished in E coat. If your S11 is pretty rotten then weld in some serious bracing otherwise the car will distort terribly. You will also nee to drill 6-8mm holes in certain parts of the body to reduce air pockets, let me know when you are ready and I'll send some pics.
SPL's waiting list is now down from 6 months to about 3 weeks. Sorry state of the car industry.

That sounds pretty much bang on what I need. Do you have any idea of the price for that?

Are you sitting down :o The whole process is about £1800-£2000 depending on how much you have done. They view a shell as , shell,doors,bonnet and boot anything else will be extra. Best contact them direct for more accurate pricing. :D

Thats in the region of what I was expecting tbh. Except I wasn't expecting doors, bonnet and boot....

I wonder if they could zinc plate the whole car at the same time?

That said, if I were a sheik I'd go for gold plating the chuffer :D

I think that's what Jonathan insinuated Alain. Acid dip first.... then weld up... acid dip again then e-coat in zinc. ;)

There is a firm at Liverpool who specilaist in delicate items had will do complete shells.
At one show they had a Fiat 500 on display that was competley galv'd.

Well as you raised the subject Peter I saw a Merc sports in what appeared to be a silver mirror finish but it wasnt as good as the one in an old episode of the avengers as that one you couldn't actually see the car because of the reflections :lol:

I saw the lovely polished alloy bodied Kirkham (Cobra 427 Replica) below at the recent Stonleigh Kit Car Show. Body work has to be super straight for it to work, but it isn't my cup of tea. Too gimikey. Regards Ian<br>Image<br><br>Image<br>

There's a Dutch 2CV restoration company that started galvanising 2cv bodies (which are fairly thin metal) and has expanded to take on other bodies too.

Fairly thin is an understatement. I used to do 1st services on 2CVs, if the owner had complained about wind noise the accepted fix was to put you knee on the inside of the door and bend the top in a bit.

Ah if only all cars were as easy to put right :)

One of the problems with hot-dip galvanising was panel distortion - but if they've solved that for 2CVs then everything else should be easier.
