Ok made a start on the engine bay getting it ready for a new lump that will be borrowed from my other minor, started to repair the front where all the rot fell out after removing the front panel.
1) cut out the rust.

2) One repair Panel made up and fitted, welds completed, there is a bit of rot, but its not structural so Ive left it for now, I will kill the rust and paint it.

3) from the front

4) then a coat of hamerite white, incase it rains later,

5) more rust to cut on the other side

6) as it didnt rain Rot almost cut out

7) I did this repair in two pieces, first the bit in the corner, then the bit across the front. I nearly lost a finger doing this If you zoom in you can see the dodgy welds, this was due to my impatience.

View from the fron of how it was left today, I will finish the welding tomorrow morning when its a bit cooler.

Nice work there, Nigel. I hadn't realised you had taken Nobby off the road. Does this mean you are without a Minor to drive now? I've just started work on my Traveller, and as always, I'm finding more and more things to do on it.

Congrats on starting on the trav, although beware of the minor, the work grows ;-) I have found with all these projects whatever you do once you start you must keep going, doing a little each day when you can afford the time, otherwise a month goes by and nothing gets done. But then that may just be me.

Yes its been off the road for a week, as she burnt a valve out and blew her head gasket. Additionally I found a few more problems. See this thread.

So yes sadly i am minorless in the driving department right now. I am planning to have her going again in a few weeks. But its finding the time to do the work.

Was that rust damage on the passenger side just under the bumper mount due to the thin pressed-steel makers plate? On mine the plate was more or less intact, but had rusted out an almost perfect rectangle of the tie plate below it......... You got away easily on the drivers side, I had to do the whole tie-plate that side!

my 57 was similar - a small hole under the makers plate.
All my other Minors have been so rotten that the makers plate was long gone

Yea I did get away quite lucky with the drivers side, but the passenger was more challenging, im trying to do this without causing more work, but its tough going, trying not to go too far.

the makers plate was gone, but there was a patch in its place, so it was probably a repair to the damage by this plate, all gone now though. I have finished the repair, I ended up having to do a sin. by putting a patch on top of my repair as the holes kept growing, its a bit ugly but II only want another year out of this car before I do a proper restoration.
