Research Ideasq

Of late I have become increasingly fascinated with the very tail end of Minor production, more specifically the last run of Travellers (made at Adderly Park)

What I want to try and do is find out which ones are still on the road/in members garages and what spec they actually are....

Does anyone have any ideas of the best way to go about this? Its a personal project, but I can see that it may have some use to the club if I manage to get enough data.

If theres sufficient interest and cars out there, I'd be looking at setting up a register for Adderly Park built cars......

Ask very nicely if you can send out a survey with the Minor Matters?

I found my car is one from Adderley Park.It was standard in every way but seemed to be less rusty than all the other Minors I have owned.I guess that's just luck.It did not have a steering lock though.

Probably best to send a letter or short article to Minor Matters detailing the information you're looking for and ask for responses to be sent to you vie e-mail or post.

I've got one. When I tried to get a BMH certificate, they said that the Adderley Park records have been lost, so I'll never know exactly when mine was built .

Me Too! I've got one :D First registered early December 1970. Teal Blue with Limeflower interior (since changed, you either love it or hate it). Standard in every respect: dynamo, over-riders, but no steering column lock. Plain grey headlining. The only bad thing is that the offside rear post is laminated rather than solid. It has delaminated over the years, but I glue it back now and then. The left hand post is solid. All wood is original. On the road, used daily.

Weren't all the Adderley Park records lost in a fire?

Yes, they were (as per blaketons post) which is another reason that I want to try!

Does anyone know if there were ever any Saloons built there? I'm pretty sure there weren't but dont relly want egg on my face...

I'm pretty sure only the last Travellers and commercials were made there. Son used to work at the Go-Kart Centre that is based part on the old factory grounds when he was at Uni (the bit that was the old engine workshops) so did a bit of reseach on it.

I'd have to check my Ray Newall book but I'm sure no saloons or dropheads were built at Adderley Park. For a time Travellers were built in the MG factory at Abingdon (1964 rings a bell but not sure if that's when it began or ended) and it was after this that they moved to Adderley Park. Will have to look it up when I get home.

The MG factory (I have a couple of MGs) built quite a lot of BMC models like Riley RMs, Austin Healeys and ofcourse MG. Maybe their experience with wooden framed Rileys and MGs, up to the TF 1500, meant that they were better placed to cope with the Traveller body.

For a time Travellers were built in the MG factory at Abingdon (1964 rings a bell but not sure if that's when it began or ended) and it was after this that they moved to Adderley Park.
10,818 travellers were built at Abingdon between 1960 and 1964, along with 9,147 vans and 49 pick ups.

3,270 Travellers were built at Adderley Park - chassis numbers 1290813 to 1294082. (Figures from Paul Skilleter's book)

Some of the late travellers had 'ash' coloured wing piping rather than body colour, to match the wood :D

Here's some information on my Teal Blue Traveller, chassis number 1293704F. It has a steering lock and was first registered in September 1971. I still have the original bill of sale. I think that's when the tow bar was fitted; must check.

It belonged to Mrs Wren of Manchester until 1991 (Had a goldseal gearbox in 1982). Then it passed to a Mr Nutbrown and then Mr Burrows, who undertook some restoration work (New wood, new blue/grey interior, respray) and fitted the 1275 MG Midget engine (No 12CEDAH3849) and gearbox, with 1 3/4 inch SU carb, LCB manifold and straight through exhaust, plus some anti tramp bars and an anti roll bar.

I have owned it since 2003 and have added a 5 speed gearbox, disc brakes (There was already a servo), gasflowed lead free head, 4.55 CWP with L.S.D., heated rear screen and halogen lights. Apart from keeping it clean and polished, that's about it. There are one or two things I want to sort out but essentially the car is good. It doesn't get used a lot (I cycle to work) and is kept indoors.

Thanks for that info.

I'm going to try and set up a database of these cars and see what I can find out! :D

I think my trav is an Adderley park car. It's an H reg, but has at some point had marina discs, 1275, telescopic rear dampers fitted. It's also at some point had a Fiat twin cam conversion judging by the extra mounting points in the engine bay. So it's not too original.

It's a bit of a shed at the moment, needing a new floor and new wood (why do we take on these projects  !)

It's white with a black interior, no steering lock.

I'll hunt out the chassis number etc.
