a weekend of nitromors, and some bad news.
so, after a long weekend of nitromors, masks and gloves, i've gotten most of the paint off my poor chrome.
the badge and ornament are looking good, as are the interior handles and things, along with two hubcaps! i've done the top piping around her grille, and now i only have the bumpers, mirrors, light surrounds and main grill to go.
boy-oh-boy. she looks way better with that black off her!
next up: brakes!
we also discovered her rust is worse than we thought, in removing the front light surriounds, i managed to get my hand between the main and the indicator.. and through the panel. completely rotted through - her new-ish paint job had decieved us all.
looks like we have either a lot of fibreglassing to do, or a lot of welding on plates.
oh dear.

You must be a bit disappointed - its the only thing that stops me from doing this to the pick-up - worried that lots of paint is holding some bits together
Don't fret, as Dean says, loads of help here, you'll get so much help you won't know what to do with it all
Just remember it will look good again - soon and will keep you out of the pub
Good Luck

Replacement panels are cheap enough new and even cheaper secondhand. If you post up what parts you need then I would guess that we'll have them all available for you, somewhere.... I've got a passenger front wing that will be going to the tip shortly so its free if you, or anyone wants it - It's not perfect but there are no holes in it either

thanks for all the encouragement guys! I am a little dissapointed, as the guy who sold it to us said it was structurally sound, the silly man! anyways, it's just another adventure and will keep me busy over the summer.
my dad is restoring both a 49 ford pickup and a 32 (fibreglass) ford roadster at the moment, so i've got a lot of help from him, which i'm very thankful for!
(although he does have a slight vendetta against mogs >:)
PSL184, I've PM'd you about that wing! It's the passenger wing that has the big hole in it!

Always a good idea to throroughly inspect the car yourself rather than accept the word of the seller. Hope you didn't spend too much on it though as when I first saw it on e-bay it had a buy it now price of £799, with no MOT!I am a little dissapointed, as the guy who sold it to us said it was structurally sound, the silly man!
Anyway, good luck with sorting everything out. If you need any advice just post a question up on the board and someone will be able to answer

Well, I can say we got it for lower than that! The interior, electrics and fiddly bits are all sound, it just seems to be some of the panels that need a little love :3LouiseM wrote:Always a good idea to throroughly inspect the car yourself rather than accept the word of the seller. Don't worry too much about wings - they bolt on and can be changed.
The most important thing is the real structure of the shell (sills, inner wings, chassis legs, rear chassis extensions, centre crossmember etc..)
Oh and btw - did you have any thoughts on those rear wings yet? I was thinking of ebaying them. No great rush but I need to shift parts by September as I won't have much space after then.

True, true, it does seem to be only the wings - everything else has had a decent inspection - the roof, bonnet, boot, chassis.. etc are all sound, just the back end of the bottom (where the bottom of the back doors would be on a 4-door) needs a little attention - a slight rust has happened there. The chassis is definetly good though, it'd been repainted and rustproofed before they took it off the road, it might need a tiny touch up, but it's good. I'm glad for dad's knowledge at fixing! His first job was re-leading rolls-royces and repairing boats, an odd mix, but very useful. Our garage is full of ford parts at the moment, hopefully we can shift those soon to make room for the mog to go in and be worked on.rayofleamington wrote:Don't worry too much about wings - they bolt on and can be changed.

Go ahead and ebay those wings, I'l let my dad know, and if he deems it urgent enough, I'm sure he'll have a bid at them.

It seems to just be a bit of surface rust (: I'm not too worried about that, it's easy enough to fix. It looks like the previous owner has covered it in anti-rust paint. Tehee.alainmoran wrote:Umm ... the bit at 'the back end of the bottom' ... can I be the first to say EEEK
I truly hope that your cills & inner wings arent in the shape that mine were!

If I remeber correctly the chrome was all painted black.polo2k wrote:how did it look?
Why anybody would do that is beyond me, poor car. At least its getting back into shape now.
Sorry to hear about the front wings, but at least they aren't a bit thats holding the car together! As long as the good bits are solid you can bolt on solid new wings, its all money though.

It certainly does look much better! That black paint was really tough stuff - they'd put about 15 layers on, I swear! I think they wanted all the chrome to be black, to go with the whole 'Riddler' theme. Ah well, different people, different onions.
We've decided to go with a set of new fibreglass front wings, so we can cut out all rust problems and replace them easily if needed. I'm off to uni next year, so it seems sensible, as I'll be far away from any welding equipment. (Thankyou very much PSL184, for your offer of a very decent looking metal one!)

Hopefully Wrexham! It's the only place in the country that does Illustration for Children's Publishing, which is basically my dream job.8009STEVE wrote:Which one?I'm off to uni
It's fibreglass and on a landrover chassis, we have an old ford flathead to go in it hopefully this summer - it needs work, but I'll post up some pics when I can! Coupes are lovely! I kinda wish ours had a roof.hotrodder13 wrote:i know this is off topic but can i see a pic of your dads 32 roadster. my dad has a 32 coupe.
