what id like to know is would it be a good idea to sell the original reg number to get a car for less. or would it affect the value in the future. or would it not make any difference except make buying a car cheaper.

I would say that its always nice to have the original plate on a car ( i cant have mine as its a manx one and I live on the mainland)

The plate can only be transfered from one car with an MOT to another.

To my mind this is a big can of worms.... I think it does alter the value of a car but only if the car you are buying / selling is an original, mint example. Otherwise it makes no difference. To most "normal" people the plates stand for snobbery and elitism and a lot of sellers can think there average car is worth thousands because of the plates? If the seller wants the hassle of selling the original plate so you can get a decent car cheap then its a good idea but don't be conned into thinking the reverse cause they aren't easy things to sell at the moment.....

Just value the car for what it's worth as it stands - and ignore the number plate -unless it's "A 1" or something like that!

You wouldn't expect to see a concours car with an 'age related' plate, and conversely, a tatty Minor is no better condition for having it's old number retained.
If the number is valuable and the car is poor, then there's a risk that the car will get bought for its number then after number is transferred the car may be scrapped.
If the £££'s from the sale of the old plate get spent on the car, then nobody looses really.

Some people get upset about selling classic registrations, and others buy classics just to make a profit on the reg. The number itself has no 'real' value - it's just a government issued ID, so if someone sees it as valuable (rather like a rare stamp..) that's up to them.

Morris never made registration plates... The car is an individual ;-)
In the same way, my passport number is not my identity, my DNA has a lot more to do with it.

As I have said many times before, I think originality is important, and would always pay more for an original car with it's original plate, than I would for a totally restored car with an age related plate. But that's just me.
