Looking through the parts books, you will see that a water temp gauge was available. It shows a simple panel to mount it and it looks like it goes under the instrument panel. Has anyone ever seen one of these? Which holes did they use. I installed the MG safety gauge with both the temp and oil pressure indicators and used the holes for the earlier chrome ash tray that would be unused on the driver's side.
I'm just wondering where it was supposed to be mounted.

From what i understand, i think gauges are optional accessories so mounting location should vary. Correct me if i am wrong

The water temperature gauges were mostly Smiths. These were mounted underneath the dashboard using a plastic mounting bracket (it had a hole in for the guage to fit in) These can be purchased from any motor spares shop as people still fit extra guages to their cars today.

I bought a secondhand Smiths temperature gauge last year for my 948cc minor, then realised I had to source a mini head as the head on my minor had no outlet to attach it to. But had the new head converted for unleaded petrol and the gauge works fine, so to me it was worth the expense...

I've got a temperature gauge in the shed that’s uses a long capillary tube and not an electrical connection. It’s also mounted on what looks like a core plug so should fit any A series. I’ll post some pictures of it up later.
I’ve also got a thermostat housing with an electrical temperature sender fitted to it, possibly because the 948 didn’t have the ‘in the head’ fitting.
There are many different ways of fitting the connections but as for the gauge itself I’d drill a couple of holes under the dash and mount it there in a mounting plate.

Attached is a scan of the parts book page. It's optional equipment. I'm just asking if anyone ever saw one. What would be the face color. Typical Smiths are black but this one might have matched the speedo face.[/img]<br><br>

Try looking at Merlinmotorsport.co.uk They have a range of 14 temp gauges which have a nice period look to them.

I'm not looking for a gauge, just information on the manufacturer available one. Was it just up to the dealer or installer to drill two holes to mount it wherever that wanted to? I used the mounting holes intended for the chrome style under fascia ashtray, but these holes are spaced such that they are near the dge of the gauge bracket, which is not how it is shown in the parts book. No big deal just one of those silly little mysteries that probably will never be answered.
