Thanks for the ideas, I'm sure that Andrew will pick up on them. A few years ago there was a cowboy (in the nice way) and Indian display team complete with village. At Scunthorpe there was a viking re-enactment. Some people moaned about both; and now here's a suggestion for a similar thing. I've enjoyed them all, and welcome all ideas. I think that there is a limit as to what can be staged on a rally field at a sensible price. I'm sure that all sincere suggestions would be welcomed.

Interestingly, at this year's rally, one chap was complaining to me about one aspect, saying that he could have done much better. I asked him if he'd be prepared to put his name down to help. I've never seen anyone run away so fast.....

I don't mean to play devils advocate and I am not implying that I would like to organise the national*
some people have been commenting that the entertainment is a bit distant from minoring. would this be in the same basket?
To help ease the organising burdon would it be feasible that once the venue has been picked the local communities could be contacted and then the MMOC could effectivley sublet an area to a local fete as im sure the turnout would be high for an event for local people where there is an extra event, and im sure the MMOC would benefit from the local contacts and experiance that the locals would no doubt provide.
This follows nicely to a comment another member** suggested in having a MMOC national rally with a guest appearance from another smaller club (I think the scimitar club was suggested)

* The MMOC rally must be a daunting event to organise. I think the committee do a good job and in this post I simply mean to provide positive suggestions to enhance the event and provide and extra set of eyes.

I could not have said it better myself. I have always been prepared to help, whether my suggestions were taken up or not.

to renforce what I said in my above post (incase i seemed indecicive) I don not have the time or rescources to orgainise the event except in a "thoughtful" way

I have the time (early retirement), the enthusiasm and commitment (7 years Chief Concours Judge) and, without wishing to blow my own trumpet, the ability (2 LEO Runs, 2 Regional Rallies, and coming up, the first MOT-UK). Just need the support.

However perhaps it is just too late (and I mean this from my own point of view)

Perhaps the kids could be entertained by the Mug's Matters artist doing signed sketches?

Ash, I feel that the most beneficial way to 'ease the organising burdon' would be to employ a professional event organising company who could send out a questionaire to all members asking what they would like to see at the National rally. Once collated and the venue sorted they could then see what is practical and financially prudent to include into what is basically a 'car' show.
This move would free up the volunteers from the MMOC so that all they need to do is organise the MMOC events.
Toilets,showers,food outlets and entertainment would be the remit of the event organiser.
This route may well cost more that the most recent Nationals but I feel that the benefits would far outweigh the disadvantages.through higher attendance figures alone
To outsource the collation of what members want from the National would give a fully independant and accurate assessment of what members really want, and would stop the constant speculation and gripes that always get posted on this forum soon after the National.
It would also tell us if infact the National should be a 'car' show and celebration of our members ownership of their chosen classic, as I believe, or just another glorified village fete.

I still believe that there should be something for everyone, and bearing in mind the clubs recent losses, incuding the 60th birthday at Gaydon, which wth respect seems to have been designed as a 'car' show, I dont think our village fete did badly in raising £3,730 after expenses. But as I have said, this is just my opinion.

The questionaire would select 'exactly 'what the members would want from the rally. If this means craft shows , re enactments of battles, dog displays, clowns etc then so be it.
Are we trying to raise money by having the National, or is it not enough just to celebrate our joint hobbies.
If I go to my wifes 'beading or quilting' National shows, should I expect a morris minor show and auto jumble to be there too
As I alluded if the homework is done competantly as to what folk want from the National , we will be inundated with attendees and the MMOC will make a fortune

I have always emphasized the importance of providing what the membership wants. Hopefully by doing this we can improve on the 172 cars and approximately 300 people (out of around 10,000 members) that attended the 60th Birthday Party.

In a perfect world, yes, it would be nice just to celebrate our hobby, but in the real world, if the club is to survive, then unfortunately money is needed.

So yes Jonathon, I am in favour of a questionaire. The club is in its members hands, not our two opinions.
