At idle my battery charge light thingy majig glows red...is this just because the dynamo doesn't output much at idle?? When I rev the engine or start driving the light goes out immediately.

That's normal. If it stays on you've got a charging fault.

That's how it should be !

Isn't that the proper idling speed indicator?

Get it as slow as you can.

Not too slow or you will be low on oil pressure. You don't want the orange light flickering

Doesn't IGN stand for Idles Great Now?

Of course when the light is full on, it's too slow

When it's too slow and lose oil pressure then It's Getting Noisy

Its the Ignition warning light to let you know if the battery is getting charged.

My ignition warning light goes out as soon as I start the engine, I think my idling speed is too high anyway. Have found the right screw on the carb, which way should you turn it to lower the speed?
Should the ignition warning light be slightly on if the idle speed is correct?

You screw it out to reduce the speed (try it and see! :)).

Probably, it depends a bit on the engine. If the engine tends to stall at junctions, increase the idle speed a little.

If the car has an alternator - the red light will normally NOT be on at idle.

?
BigAl has a dynamo but Alex and BMC are replying to Geraldine's message, and it is not clear whether she has a dynamo or an alternator.

Actually I'm not sure whether I have a dynamo or an alternator myself!
How do I tell?

If the unit is about 10 inches long, cylindrical (a bit like a thinner version of the starter motor) then it's a dynamo. If it's shorter, fatter and made of aluminium with black plastic covers at the back, it's an alternator..
