well, i'd been out and about in my village yesterday, and noticed that the usually permanent traveller has been gone for more than two weeks (this saddens me).

it got me thinking about the scrappage scheme.

what if there could be a list drawn up of vehicles that scrapyards will not accept in exchange for a scrappage discount?
examples: 'classic' designs that are easily recognisable, such as minors and classic minis. the limits would probably only apply to the rarest years though, years where not many of that car was made, and alos special editions of that vehicle. (i hope that made sense)

ideas?

on a side note: there's a lovely guy named andy in my village, he has a knox international pick-up, and very kindly invited my boyfriend and i into his garage for a snoop! he even said he'd give us a spin when we'd passed our tests. what a lovely man.

It is not the scrapyards decision, it is the main dealers that take in cars under that scheme.

It's not the dealer's decision either - the scheme is run to government rules.
The dealer's job is to sell cars so why would they turn away a sale?

good point, but why scrap the still decent cars? why not put them back out on the market for a little over £2000.. profit!

It's to get the old high emission cars off the road & scrapped. Selling them on after the trade-in would make the scheme pointless.

It's more designed at cars which are not 'classics' but are over 10 years old. I considered parting in my '95 astra, and it seemed very attractive.

I think Rich-legg has made a very valid point here. The scheme was never created to target Classic Cars. Sadly there are a few classic owners who have, for whatever reason, decided to take it up. As my Dad would have said "There's nowt as queer as folk"

Bill, if you want a public 'discussion' on the subject, be prepared to hear the other side... Nobody needs all this antagonism, so hopefully we can all move on.

The scheme was never created to target Classic Cars.

If legislation is poor, it will be used very differently to the intention. This is the same with all legislation.
In this case the government were warned regarding classic cars and they chose not to care about it.

Some would like us not to be annoyed about this this badly written policy, however I don't see why it's right for the classic car movement not to care about scrapping classic cars for no good reason.

If the legislation was intended to remove polluting old cars, then it should have been written that way (carbon committee wanted it to be aimed at the introduction date of Catalysts etc... as that was a step change in emmissions due to the change from carb to injection on low tech models)

At present you can scrap a 117g/km vehicle (there are some that fall within the scheme) and buy any car including a new 300+g/km gas guzzler.
The scheme was a knee jerk reaction to help the car industry sell cars . I can appreciate the sentiment (as I'm loosing my job because of the automotive crash) but still can't see the excuse for writing a policy with so little thought of the consequences.

One thing I certainly agree on is that this topic has been done to death! At least one thing is certain - we all care about them

And because I pointed this out to you, and tried to do the job I was appointed to do, I'm the one that gets banned. In my view politics have no place on this site.
As you have said in the past when I have suggested ways the club could move forward, go direct to those concerned, do not take it up on here.

That doesn't suprise me in the least. Much as we love our cars there will always be a proportion of any marque that are being limped along year on year with compromising servicing and repairs. Some of us here drive budget cars and are loyal/competant enough to continue and hang the outlay - be it time or £. But some are owned by people who kissed their prince only for him to turn into a frog.

What bickering? I have always tried to stop any that did start, and to encourage people to simply use the site to help each other.

In fact even the negative criticising of the club was banned right from the start, although pro-active suggestions and ideas are of course welcome.

Give it another go, and let me know what you think.
