MM tourer 1949

Dears Friends,
I' m Portuguese and I have a question to put to the forum may be some one of you can help me.
At the moment I have 2 Morris minor 1000, 1 Traveller from 1964 and a convertible (replica) from 1969, but that is not the question.
The question is: I find here in Portugal a MM tourer from 1949 (Blue) it seems that in Portugal are only 2 cars of this model one in exibition in a Museum aqnd the secound one is my main question, but I'm not sure if the car is a really original, this is because the rear side windowns are not detachable they are fixed like a normal convertible. Do you know if in 1949 they did this alteration of 1948 model's, I will very happy if some body can help me because, I'm planning to buy this Tourer on next Tuesday/Wednesday.

Hi Carlos, welcome to the site.

The fixed side windows were introduced in June 1951, although I supppose it is possible that somebody changed these to fixed on the car that you are looking at, although this would seem a strange thing to do. Do you know the chassis number of the car, and have you got some photo's? These might help to determine whether it is genuine or not.

A 1949 tourer should have removeable side screens. As Louise says, fixed rear windows came in during 1951. I would have to check my records to see if there were any lowlight (your's is a lowlight?) cars with fixed rear side windows as by early 1951 all MMs had gone over to high headlamps. Let me know the chassis no. on the plate under the bonnet which should agree with the number stamped on the engine bulkhead alongside the accelerator cable. If however it is a CKD then there will probably be a weld line across the car in that position.

It is probable that the car was converted from a saloon, if the person who did it bought a kit for it they would have probably got the kit for a later car and therefore converted it with the later fixed sidescreens.
The chassis number should tell all...

thanks for your full information, at the moment I can't inform the chassis nr. , this car is a lowlight and LHD.

It doesnt seem to have the strengthening panels either side of the dash board so could be a converted saloon?

I bet, with that chassis number, mike.perry could give you the definative answer.....

It is a stunning car and looks "right" if you know what I mean.

For whoever posted about the triangular strenghtening pieces, weren't they a later addition?

As far as i know they were always fitted and the 49 MM tourer i used to own had them. A converted saloon would explain the fixed side windows though and it is definatly an original lowlight even if it did have a roof on when it left the factory!

So does that mean it's a very early "chop" without the under dash strengthening pieces?
