From the diagram in the repair manual, it seems that the warning lamp in the trafficator switch get it's live potential from the switched trafficator and the return (earth) through the unused trafficator. Am I right?

Yes, but you must make sure the internal connections are still present in the switch or you will have to bridge the relevant terminals with wire on the back of the switch....

It took me ages with the help of friends on the website, to work out how to get the trafficator switch warning light to work. Basically you connect an extra wire between terms 1&2, ensuring that the opposite terms. are connected as shown in the diagram. Everything should now work, assuming that you have checked the 12V bulb.
Don't ask me why!!!!!!!!!!

I rigged the trafficator switch before I firtted it in the car and it worked. Basically the lamp lights up in series with the magnetic coil of each trafficator, which although it would have a voltage across it, would not be enough to raise the trafficator arm.

Actually the bulb would have a voltage of around 6 volts across it and it lights up dim, thus saving lamp life
