My cars don't like barbeques!!

Yesterday I set off to go to the Northants branch meeting, this month being the annual branch barbeque, shortly after I left the house the car ground to a halt, of course the guilty culprit being the fuel pump, I hit it a few times to limp the car home, then went in the modern.
Looking back, this is my second break down in just over two years of minor ownership, the previous one being in the other minor when I got an air lock in the tank on the way home from the branch barbeque in the first week of July last year http://mmoc.org.uk/index.php?name=PNphp ... ic&t=20924

Is it just a strange coincidence or do my cars really not like barbeques? :o

Andy, didn't you also break down momentarily last week - the fuel pump was giving you a warning then which you ignored

Mine doesn't like full tanks of petrol. The time the engine went and also the time the gearbox went it had a full tank of petrol.

Luckily he didn't complain about having a full tank to go to the national :)

Aye, but talking to several people at the national about it some blamed the fuel pipe and some blamed the carb! I was led to believe the pump wasn't at fault!

You can still get fuel vaporisation (indicating carb trouble) if the pump is not pumping at full power - esp in the heat we have at the moment. The less fuel in the pipe means it gets hotter! As you have the 1275 why not fit a lift pump. In my opinion (and others may disagree) they are more reliable and less prone to failure....

Well I've cleaned the contacts etc. and i'll be replacing the pipe anyway.

How difficult would that be to do? and more importantly, how much will it cost me? :-?

Easy to do and would cost you only the price of a lift pump (scrapyard) and a length of fuel hose...

Since the modifications to my 1275 I might have to concider one of those myself. Where would I get hold of one?

Search eBay for "mini fuel pump". I suspect you may need a spacer block as well as the pump...

I had a lift pump fitted to my 1275 and had to remove it when i fitted my 3 branch manifold as there was no good way of piping it up without one of the pipes being VERY close to the exhaust pipe! Seeing as the set up in Andy's car is very similar to mine for some reason  then i guess the same problems would be met!

Yes they are a good and reliable pump but you will lose your option of a secret fuel pump switch as well!
Gone back to a good old SU now :D

I have the same set up Carlo and don't have any probs with pipe routing - just needs a little thought. I'll stick some pics up at the weekend if I remember or if someone reminds me...

Maybe it was just the angle of the ports on the pump i had then that were making things difficult? I seem to remember the originals could be swivelled to face in any direction! 8)

Dont forget the 1.3 Marina pump fits as well, but if you have clearance issues a Facet Pump can always be plumbed in at the rear end of the car.

Yes, true - maybe that's how I got round it. I can't remember right now but I will look in daylight...
