Bolt head should be 1/4" Whitworth (Same as 5/16" BS)
Thats about 13.3 mm in metric (non existent) or arounf 17/32 AF (not sure that exists either!)

So you'll probably be needing some Olde English tools for that.
The bolt itself has a plain section (non threaded) long enough to pass thorough the interface, and the diameter is a good fit to the holes. This makes them very good for the job...

However I've seen some of them replaced with M8 bolts (far from ideal) :-?

The propshaft bolts are normally fitted with spring washers or nylock nuts

One more thing, do I absolutely need to remove the prop before I can take the engine and gearbox out in unison?

If you split engine and box before removing, then engine will come oput on its own. After that the box can come out into the engine bay without removing the prop.
However this is making life 50 times more hard than just removing the prop.

Also remember that when the prop comes out of the box, the gearbox oil will run out of the hole...

No idea - I've never had to look in there! The internet wasn't around when I took myfirst minor apart... and compared to most owners I'm a youngster
