In Shetlands - I would imagine there will be nice wool blankets for underfelt!
Whatever you fit - you must make sure it doesn't get WET (difficult in Shetlands I imagine !) - and hold moisture against the floor panels.
Most carpet shops will only have rubberised 'underfelt' - which goes crumbly very quickly in a car (and also in high wear areas in the house too !)

If you want to avoid foam then I would recommend 'crumb rubber underlay'. I work for a large department store and this is the stuff they use that has the best sound deadening qualities.
Here's an example so you know what it looks like:

Can't see any reason why you can't lay this rubber side down.

Yes lay it rubber down felt up . The rubber is waterproof so should protect the floor and the felt offers excellent sound proofing. Glue down using contact adhesive;keep the doors open. :-?
