Is it easy to refit a steering wheel? My current one is rather scuffed. In the BMC workshop manual it says there is a special steering wheel removal tool I presumed it would just be popping off the horn push and undoing a bolt or something.

yes it is a case of popping out the horn push..

undo the big nut in the centre.. if you have the special tool you can remove the nut all the way... if you do not have the special tool undo it but leave it on a few turn.

soak the inside with releasing oil.

with the special tool it should then be possible to use it like a hub extractor i suppose ( never seen one ) to gently pull the steering wheel up and off the splines.

without the special tool hit the back of the steering wheel with the flat of your hand / with a hammer ( but this will destroy the wheel) until eventually it comes flying off the splines at great speed ( hence the reason for leaving the nut in place, i.e. the nut catches the wheel rather than your chest / face catching the wheel!)

The main bit of damage is around the horn push but I dont know if this part of the steering wheel or a seperate part which I could replace instead of a whole new wheel. There is a picture so you can see what I mean. Other than that the steering wheel isnt too bad apart from some scuffs.

There should be a screw that holds the horn push on and all that centre bit will come off in one piece....

So that cracked bit is part of the horn push? I could just buy a new (rather pricey) horn push and try and polish the steering wheel up then.

Remove the fuse before the steering wheel. It saves upsetting the neighbours
