How do you sell a number plate.
I was wondering how you go about selling a UK number plate ?
I am thinking of buying a four door saloon in Ireland but it has a UK plate that I'm told is worth c.£800. But I was informed that if I wanted to sell it I had to return to the UK to get the car MOT'd, apply to the DVLA for a new registration and sell on the old plate. Is that right ?

your source is correct to sell a number plate the car it is on has to have a current MOT. however once you have the MOT you could drive back to Ireland and get the number plate put on a "retention certificate" whilst you try and sell it.. once the plate is on the retention certificate you do not need to MOT the car again it effectivly held until you put it on another car or the buyer puts it on a car.

I'd take any "valuation" of a number plate with a big pinch of salt, especially if the owner thinks they can crank the price up by that amount.
See how much number plate dealers will offer you for it 1st.
Times are hard and I would bet that the market isn't very buoyant at the moment for some reason

I agree - that 'value' is meaningless. Search ebay for similar 'number plates' for sale - that's the real value!! And yes - the car needs to hav MOT and roadtax to transfer the number. Be aware - where the number has already been transferred, a 'non-transferrable' age related number is issued - make sure that's not the case with this car! I would say - value the car as it is - without any consideration for the number plate value.

been there twice, the only numbers the companies will buy direct are rare valuable ones where they have already had an enquiry about, all they do otherwise it to list your number in adverts and wait for a buyer, then take a large commision.E bay with a reserve it the better way,and yes get it onto a retention certificate, it makes it easier to sell on ,no transfers and messing about getting new number and tax and, mot change, about £50 to do, I think(Not sure) but again not sure you have to repay this each year to keep it retained.
