Morris Minor Owners Club

I have a query on my spring hanger plate repair panel. With this now welded in place I need to replace an additional 3/4 inch down the long edge. I thought about buttwelding a thin strip but am concerned that this won't be as strong as perhaps putting a wider strip - say 2 inches wide - over the gap and completing full lap welds.

Hope that makes sense? Views please?
