A better varnish for travellers?

Post by cormorant »

Hi don't know how much use this is but maybe of help to owners of woodies? I live on a boat and am always looking for decent varnishes as all that scraping off and revarnishing is a right pain. I've always liked Sadolin products but the usual sort of Sadolin would look horrible on a boat or a traveller.

I did my badly neglected mizzen mast with stuff called Sadolin Clearcoat last October, I think the wood is some kind of pine, was very grey and weathered but sanded up well. Gave it 4 coats, it's an oil/varnish and doesn't flake off, it gradually erodes. It's been through a horrible winter in a salty marine environment and stood up very well. The other thing I noticed is that although I accidently bashed a lump out of the newly applied finish it sort of self-healed and didn't flake off, no water ingress so I am very impressed with it.

Don't know how it would look on ash, anyone tried it on a traveller?
Image
if i had a traveller i'd use this,

i build/restore wooden boats for a living(20+yrs) and over the years have used lots of different products, we use just two different varnishes, the one above and jotun ravilakk,Image though they've now added sillica to it and we've started to have problems with overcoating with it.

its down to personal prefference but i'd not use anything water based.
