Just a quickie for information,

A friend of mine has just rescued a 1951 saloon from the scrapman for the very reasonable sum of £25! Its in an ok state just the usual rust on the spring hangers, inner wings and sills, with the original larger style rear wings etc etc. But its missing its engine and box and a few other bits. I have been roped in to help with the restoration, and my first job is to track down an engine and box. It has the earlier style rear axle (the square non-banjo type) So I assume I'm after a sidevalve engine and box?

Any help on engine/box or early saloon matters in general greatly appreciated!

The ohv engine was introduced in 1952 so this would certainly be an MM series with sidevalve engine.

If you want to keep it original - then yes -side valve engine required. Otherwise -just change the rear axle - and fit a later engine and box - it will be a much more 'useable' car - can still look original externally - and can be changed back to the early engine etc later on when/if the parts become available.

There was a guy not so long ago on here looking to sell a sidevalve engine and box, I got a carb and new loom from him his user name was Japanesi and he was from the south of England. If you were putting the later engine in a 51 the front bulkhead crossmember would have to be modified to suit.

Hmm might be, cant remember the reg off-hand. Would be strange if it was the same car!

There are 2 types of side valve engines, basically with or without provision for a water pump. For a 1951 Series MM you should be looking for the later type of engine which will either have a pump or a blanking plate where the pump fits. The later engine also has alloy castings in which corrosion is a problem, but replacements are available.
I have a s/v engine and gearbox crated up in my garage which incidentally came from Devon and is on its way to Holland.
Could you let me have the chassis no. of your car so that I can check it against the Series MM Register
