If you get a production trace done from the BMIHT, it will normally show the key number.

Alain... that's close enough, it's 'escutcheons', unfortunately
they are held on by a 'spire locknut' which can only be released
when the handle /glass have been removed! I've a nice shiney
new one but haven't been able to face all that work to fit it!

Are these different on 2-door cars? The escutcheons on my 4-door are only held in by a screw on the handle. 1 min job to replace it.

Yes, you lucky devil, the 4 doors are much simpler.

Yarg!
What is a 'spire locknut'?
Do I need a special tool to remove it?
Yeah, I too have a shiny new one I want to fit ... I didnt realise it was going to be a lot of work though

I have always thought that it is one of those toothed washers
which push on to the spindle and bite into it so that they will
not let go..........that wouldn't explain the 'spiral' bit though,
someone enlighten us please.

Willie,
They're similar to the modern type spire nuts (the toothed washers) but it only has 2 teeth. Spire nuts also hold on the bonnet side strips & smaller ones hold on the boot & bonnet side badges.
Removal involves pulling & twisting with a pair of pliers (or gently levering but this generally distorts/breaks it)

Thanks SCOTT, I've got loads of them! What an awful lot of
work to fit one of those soppy little things to a 2 door.

Ah I know the things you mean ... easy to put on ... easy to remove ... flippin difficult to find when you've easily removed one and its popped off somewhere unknown

ALAIN, I have just fitted my new escutcheon! Not too bad,
with the door panel off and the window wound right up the
Spire clip is looking straight at you! It is awkward to remove
and even more awkward to refit as there are bits of lock in
the way. I would advise stuffing the lower door with cloth
so that if you drop it you stand a chance of finding it. I lost
mine,it's stuck in the Waxoyl and a magnet wouldn't retrieve
it. My escutcheon would not slide into position until I ground
off two little lugs which were not on the original. to remove
the actual 2 door lock involves much more dismantling.

Yeah, i found that with the window up, it's no problem to replace an escutcheon on a 2-door. I did so in the field at Knebworth.
