Shake, rattle and roll!!

Post by stevey »

hello all. hope your enjoying the weather.
after finally replacing the rear wheel cylinder on the minor (thats the whole set changed due to either siezing or leaking) Its time to sort some small niggles.

The gear stick has started to vibrate and make vibrating noises (thats the best way to explain them) at any speed over 40. The gear box steady, engine steady are all fine. Its had the gear box oil changed and topped up. I was looking at the techincal tips page, could it be the pinch bolt has worked loose. If so what the best why to sort it. IT changes gear fine and doesnt jump out or anything its just annoying.

thanks

Its probably worth checking the propshaft bearings, mine vibrated loads at 32 but went away at 35 ish. You can check for play by grabbing the shaft and trying to rattle it, mine was in an advanced state of wear making it easy to spot and it only took a couple of hours to do and about 15 quid in parts inc vat.

I intend to live forever.....so far so good

There is also a shim and O ring at the base of the gearstick which if failed will cause a rattle.....

Well the propshaft was replaced 2 years ago as it nearly shook itself to pieces coming back from the national, so there ok.
shim and O ring
So if i lift take the 3 nuts off and tkae the gear stick out and replace the o ring?

When I had similar it was simply a case of retightening the three bolts that hold the gearstick retaining plate in place.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

well you'll never guess that was loose and so no more rattle at present (fingers crossed) Its nice when it turns out to be simple.

The O rings at the end of the gear lever don't seem to last very long. Is it another poor quality issue?
