Are we allowed to talk about Austin A30 restoration?

Hello everyone! Are we allowed to talk about Austin A30 restoration? She is part Morris Minor anyway!

I've been preping and spraying primer today. How mant coats of primer should I do?

no reason why not

but please do try and take some chrome off and bumpers etc it will be a lot easier to spray

I find accurate masking a lot easier than dealing with 53 year old rusted bolts!

I assume you havent taken it to bare metal? I would probably do 1 coat and rub it down then another rubbed down before top coat

So you are re-spraying the fence in grey primer now!

What is the final colour going to be, not blue again?

Looks like a good car. Only observation I have made in the past is the roughing up of the surface tends not to go right to the edge around trim etc, so the new paint ultimately lifts around such features. That is the area I would concentrate most on. Oh- I mean on the car, not the fence. No prep ever seems needed to make paint stick perfectlyto fences, shrubs and concrete!

So What you are saying is that the whole car has to be sanded? Well I may have missed some bits.

The colour is going to be 'Old English White'. I think these little Austins look a bit gloomy when they are painted dark colours.

Yes Kate, excellent colour choice, "we've never had it so good" verses "post war gloom and rationing". Lighter colours look so much better on the old Austins, makes you wonder why they sold them in dark depressing colours in the first place.

Been sanding and filling all day. Came across this black sticky stuff across the bottom on the offside door. It looks like tar! Been on hours sanding it. It just clogs up the sandpaper in seconds.

I've got a new spray gun now. It's a Sealey professional one that normally cost £75 but I got it on ebay for £31. It took some getting used to though. The levels I had to figure out were:

1. PSI
2. Fan size
3. Paint flow
4. Trigger adjustment
5. Paint thinner level
6. Nozzle adjustment

It's really difficult as you can adjust all these which really affects the way the paint goes on. Here is the reslut of the first coat:

Can you not adjust all these settings on ANY paint spray gun? Certainly can on both of mine - and they were far from expensive.
