exhaust blow

:( had my carb' off to clean and check over, I put it back on and connected everything up, then I started the car up without putting the air filter on to see if it would start properly and low and behold the car backfired and now it seems as though the exhaust is blowing but I can't find any holes at all along the exhaust, not even from the manifold, so I am wondering if by starting without the air filter on I could have blown the baffles in the silencer, It sounds the same even with the air filter on,has anybody had this happen. :-? :-?

Can't see any connection there! Have to wonder why it 'backfired' though - which is caused by unburned fuel igniting in the exhaust - and has probably blown the baffles as you say - in the silencer. Engine idling - briefly put hand over tailpipe while some checks for leaks - but it will just be the baffles have loosened.

hi BM yes I must agree the baffles I think have either come loose or blown, in which case it must mean a new exhaust system, would that be right as it is too noisy to drive as it is.

My baffles went a while ago (no jokes please!) and if you go fast enough the noise is left far behind !!

If the baffles arte loose, tap the silencer with a hammer. Sometimes this can tighten them

or a long self tapping screw through the silencer can also re fix the baffles in place.

:-? IF THE BAFFLES ARE LOOSE THEN WHERE ABOUTS ON THE SILENCER SHOULD I GIVE IT A TAP AND / OR WHERE SHOULD I PUT A SELF TAPPER THROUGH THE SILENCER. I HAVE NEVER SEEN THE INSIDE OF THE SILENCER WHERE THE BAFFLES ARE SO WHAT DO THEY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE AND HOW ARE THEY FIXED INSIDE.

Usally they are just spot welded in. If they are loose they will fall to the lowest point so a screw up the middle from underneath should grab hold of it - There is a repair piece about doing this in the workshop manual.....

I have put a large 'G' clamp on silencers - not very pretty but it does stop them moving!
