When checking the gearbox oil level

When checking the gearbox oil level put a bit of cloth over the socket as you push it onto the filler bolt, it then holds the bolt in the socket rather than it falling on the floor!

cloth or rag or kitchen towel or even a few layers of newspaper!

Also - don't check gearbox oil levels wth engine running (on any car).
With engine running and gearbox in neutral the input shaft is spinning, which effectively pumps the oil round inside the gearbox - normally spilling it out of the level hole even if the oil level is very low.
