Doing a spot of cleaning under the bonnet. Trouble is I can't shift the black gunge on the engine bay floor. Sticky, maybe oil, grease or underseal or a combination of all three. I've tried spraying lots and lots of degreaser and leaving but still no luck. The wire brush just keeps getting gunged up. Any ideas of a truly powerful cleaning agent. Thanks

I used Tesco oven degreaser on mine before repainting and it did the trick. If it is underseal a scrape with a paint scraper will work but it may remove the paint so be ready with a primer.

Leave it on for a few hours....

Biological washing liquid can be pretty good too.....

Thanks for both those tips. I thought degreaser would be the thing to use but it seems a bit pathetic. I'll be off to get some oven cleaner and some bio washing liquid. Might do the oven and the washing as well (then again I might not!)

Also try Cellit Bang! They do a degreaser one which seems to work too - although a bit more expensive than T's own brand one.

Well you don't leave it on for long... in the ad it simply cleans them...

I'll put a penny in there and let you know if it disolves

be careful of which oven cleaner you get.
i have used with great success the original easy off oven cleaner - to strip paint.
The newer "no fume" version doesnt seem to strip anywhere near as well

I've done some serious engine bay cleaning. If you can get at it there is nothing better than a brush in a small angle grinder. 100 times better than one in a drill. If it nasty oily stuff just scrape the worst off with a paint scraper first.

It just depends on whether you're intending to strip off all the paint prior to re painting or just removing general "gunge" to clean it

if its really gunged on oil then a small scraper , but be careful and then white spirit, it is a bit messy but will take the oil and any ubderseal if any has been put on

it takes a while but will not affect paint work or rubbers etc
