scrappage scheme

I notice in the for sale section there is now a reduced price moggy.. either buy it now or will go for scrappage.... ( I won't say what I think on here )
There seems to be a growing culture with this attitude, as most of you know I'm on the lookout for another Moggy and have been to see a few lately, The last one I saw was owned by a MMOC member for over 20yrs and the conversation on the phone was they loved it to bits but now felt it was time to move on.... well, when I went to view I nearly had another heart attack and nearly got back in my car without checking it out.. apart from 4 rotten wings and other major issues I decided to make what I though was a fair offer, bearing in mind I no longer have the health to do these jobs and would have to pay someone, I was told... If it don't sell we will put it in for scrappage....... so much for enthusiasts
Anyone else come across this attitude ?

Not me but there was another topic on this recently. It was a one careful owner, waxoyl'd every year bla bla bla.... worth £1500, but want £2k or it was scrapped.

yes it shows who are classic car owners and who are classic car enthusiasts.

I have to say that if you are daft enough to buy a brand new car then.......

I mean why pay good money on something that will half in value in 2 years. Buy a used car with low miles and let some other fool take the hit.

My opinion, sorry if that upsets anyone.

Thats the thing that worries me, just about every young person buys an old, cheap car for way under £2000 as they're first car as that is all they can get hold of. Not anymore, the old cheap car this person wanted is no longer for sale as the unthoughtful owner had it destroyed instead.

Are we just going to increase the class divide? The rich can buy as many new cars as they like, the poorer will have to do without as there is no cheap second-hand car market...

I think you are wrong, a recent newspaper article quoted a drop of 51% in the first year for a popular small Ford. It also said that the depreciation will wipe out the £2,000 in 80 odd days!
New cars are for people with more money than sense.

New cars are generally sold to people who replace their cars often. They have finance on them, where they only pay the depreciation, I do it myself. I have no gripes about buying a new car. If changed frequent enough your payments in relative terms comes down as the proportion of ownership in relationship to loan goes up. Provided you look after the car.

I personally think they are trying to convert people who drive older cars. But these people generally don't want an older car for the reasons in above post. I think once these people get a quote, the payments would be too much of a hit on their pocket. Compared to their current circumstances.

"Only pay the depreciation", plus the finance. Exactly how much does all this add up to? In effect you are constantly paying a finance company for the loss of value. I just don't believe it.

Some people like driving around in new cars and are prepared to pay the price. But this scheme won't work as it isn't aimed at them.

I know and understand that that is true, what i don't understand why not buy a year old car at half the price.

However seeing as I've never had finance on a car we are taking a different perspective.

Because a certain section of the population want to be seen with the latest gizmo. Whether that is an ipod, stereo system, house decoration, in this case car. Some people will go that extra mile using finance to get the car that is the latest toy. This is why the value of cars drop the most in the first twelve months, there are generally more new car buyers around than new cars, but less buyers for one year old cars. That is different now temporarily but in general that is the norm. Car manufacturers have just spotted a market for this, so change the design slightly every year to real these customers in.

as far as I know you in the UK have the FIVA? hasn't the FIVA tried to do something about this? with all the respect I think this is an abuse and an incentive to harm the environment!

Cars produce CO2, Trees live on CO2, so by using our classics we're feeding cars, let's blame whose cutting the trees down!

it's absolute madness in my opinion!! exhange a midget ? XJ S Morris Minor for a Hyundai??? with all respect to those who own a hyundai!! but a new hyundai will cost less than the Midget Morris Minor and the XJS in about 3yrs time! I think many people don't know how to work their sums :S
