Hi folks, has anybody had any experience of problems with recon starter motors.I obtained one and on trying it found that the bendix is staying engaged once engine runs with awful grating noise.I suspect it may have wrong bendix fitted.

There are 10 tooth and 11 tooth pinion gears on starters. Do you know what you had before ? Not sure if it makes any great difference to the meshing - but obvious slight gearing difference. Also - with the 1275 engine - it's sometimes necessary to make a slight modification (adding a washer I believe) to make sure the pinion stays clear of (behind) the ring gear.

Thanks for reply BMC will check teeth on gears as this has a bearing on diameter.Fortunately I can return it.

All of the starter motors have 9 splines.I shall just keep my 39 year old unit instead. It appears Lucas may be a bit crap when it comes to making parts within tolerences.

Longdog, I had this same problem on my1275 engine when I fitted a new starter and took it back and the supplier replaced it and it has been OK since. I didn't think to count the splines, sorry?

Thanks for reply Jeff.I think it looks like there might be a faulty batch of bendixes floating around out there.I'll be having a look at Beaulieu on sat for a second hand spare.

You say 'all of the starter motors have 9 teeth' - I assume you mean all the replacement starters - but what number of teeth does your original starter have ?
