Escort 1.6 Diesel was a very good unit for it's time. My Grandad used to get 55mpg out of his and 15 years later still misses it.

Fitting something modern with the exception of the 1.8 sierra td would reqiure more re wiring etc but it would give good results.
The better engine would be the 1.6 tdci fitted to Fiesta's and focus's and fusion's (Ford PSA unit)

The 1.4 tdci diesel PSA engine as fitted to Fiesta, Mazda, Peugeout etc.. would be my preference over the 1.6!The better engine would be the 1.6 tdci fitted to Fiesta's and focus's and fusion's (Ford PSA unit)
However both will need a custom configured ECU to work on a Minor

The 1.4tdci is 68ps for the extra gain i would go for the 90ps unit.
A suitable software ecu editor connected to a laptop would be able to access the ecu thse kits are available on ebay and to tune it you may need a full rolling road session once its fitted etc.
You will be sure to need an electric fan fitted with a proper temperature sensor for the ecu etc.
The fuel tanks on the fiesta and fusion are plastic and it may well fit in the existing fuel tank hole in the boot with some metal modification.
This will be an interesting project.
