Speedo Drive

I've recently had a spate of snapped speedo cables and I'm at a loss to explain why, two different gearboxs, two different cables...
I'm thinking its either the speedo unit (replacement already obtained
) or that the path of the cable makes too tight a turn somewhere (I'm at a loss to explain where though)
Now, I today tried to remove the old speedo cable, and I did to find that the remains of the gearbox end of the cable are stuck solid - I've not had a chance to have a proper look as I did this in a carpark, but what can I do to get it out, or is a replace the drive job?
