I've been thinking about doing some finishing touches to the headlining but have no idea what it should look like! The picture shows its current state - the black vinyl has been fitted fairly well up to the strip of wood - where to go from here. Is it a good idea to put some kind of lining material underneath the lining at the back of the cab? All thoughts and ideas welcome and of course pictures and/or how to do guides would be great.
Many thanks Ani
depends on how original you want it
there wewre several ways of doing the back bit
one way was to fit the headlining under the metal bit and then a vinyl covered strip of plywood, drilled for the bolt holes and bolted on then the vinyl strip screwed to that
another way, and more popular with vans was simply a rubber u channel with a vinyl cover , very simialr to the door surround seals was simply pushed over the headlining at the back where the roof and cab back were formed
another was a just a rubber strip, this was used mainly on gpo and post office vans
thats the back
the center bit of head lining had a metal hoop going across the center to hold the headlining and stop it from sagging the front was done the same way as saloons
phew got to have a lay down

Thanks Dennis - I'm not bothered too much about original just thought it would be nice to tidy it up. Unfortunately without some pictures or diagrams none of this means a great deal to me

Maybe there is someone out there who has got a finished one that they could take photos of???

yes, there are two formers or battens that trap/sandwich the headlining material, one is covered in fabric, this is the outer one, the other is bare timber...
they are attached by the bolts and screws that attach the back of the cab together...
Ok - think I follow that - think it could be a tricky job to do - probably need a good helping of patience and glue. I take it then that the remainder of the rear cab from the bolts to floor is just bare metal?
I'm amazed that all this didn't rot away - I suppose its made of some kind of vinyl. Thanks again - you're becoming an expert on taking Minor photos

the sandwich pieces in close up, look quite easy to make, just glued fabric strips on a thin piece of hardboard cut to shape
for what its worth the front peice is held in by 2 metal strips that locate in the upper screen frame
they are about where the clips for the sunvisor is
this was the only method used on the late vans, pick ups and saloons
the rear had a few options

Thanks Dennis - I expect its a case of making something to fit that looks ok. Don't suppose anyone keep spares of this kind for the pick-up?

Don't know ani, trying to find bits for pickups is difficult, at least these bits are easy to make yourself, you know, the old blue peter spirit. the bare timber piece had bolt recesses, but you could probably make one without them
Sounding good -) All being well I'll be down to the Rally next Sunday - unfortunately Charlie can't make it so I'll be a convoy of one! Don't forget I've still got your jack. Perhaps it will be useful if we could manage to fit your spare exhaust - would be good to get the fumes out the back end rather than the side
