Kingpins

I thought that all of this talk of kingpins wasn't going to affect me, untill we investigated why the bottom joint on Molly's driver side was found to be seized as James was cleaning it for painting.
With the use of heat and panatrating oil we got some movement and with a agreat deal of effort managed to turn it out, but this is what is left.

We're hoping that the kingpin on the traveller that we've found in a hedge might be able to donate its front leg, but given it's state of vegitation it's doubtful. But there's no cost involved so it's worth a try.

Yes - the thread has been stripped off by the fulcrum pin! Judging from the top part of undamaged thread - that leg was ok before the 'vandals' got to it!!

Sadly I've seen that done all too often....

With still no new spares to hand - I do hope you have a 'workable' king pin you can fit meantime ! Be sure to take the fulcrum pin out first, next time !

Bit of a gamble - they could well be 'cast-offs' (no trunnions fitted) - at least the single unit is a complete suspension - so presumably was working on a car.

Hi all, thanks for the replies, only just got chance to log on again.

Yep, you're right, but no, the thread wasn't fine before we started.
The Fulcrum pin was totally seized and the top thread in the lower link had all but rusted away due to a missing seal.

We'll wait and see the state on the hedge find before I go buying more bits, as you say it could be rubbish.

Brian

First time I've been called a vandal though, thanks for your understanding.

You should have bought that ebay leg! They really are hard to find now. You must have used extra-ordinary force to drag the threads off that leg as it came up past the fulcrum pin!!!!!!! And that IS what has happened - the top half threads look 'usable' - but the lower section has obviously been ripped off.
vandal = "persons who cause senseless destruction ........"

Guilty as charged then judge.
My defenition of a vandal is someone who causes sensless destruction having no regard for the consequences or those who may be effected.
I on the other hand, was attempting to rectify an already seizes pivot assembly with the best of my knowledge and that of those around me.
I used less force in trying to turn the kingpin out of the lower link, than we used in trying to get the fulcrum pin out.
I know that I've caused the damage to the pin and it'd now useless, but hey, the man who never made a mistake never made anything.

The traveller that we're pulling out of the hedge may have a seized or worn kingpin assembly, but that one one ebay may have been in the same state. I'll worry about that later.

Thanks for the comments.
