Fuel Pump Points.

My fuel pump stopped on the run home yesterday, started again with a good tap. I have cleaned the points but was thinking of the best way forward as from what I have read once this problem starts it tends to reoccur.

1)Should I change the points, never done this before so could make a pigs ear of it and end up buying a new pump.

2) Buy a new pump.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello Leafie,

if I remember correctly you need to screw the bottom point a certain number of turns or else the toggle will not work correctly, so I suggest getting a manual to check the procedure. There is no reason why you can't successfully get a few more years out of your pump.

And pick up a second hand spare -and carry it with you. The original pump will then work for ever!

I'd replace the points rather than the whole pump. I had to re-do the points in a new pump after about two years so they obviously weren't right in the first place. It's not given any trouble since, and that's probably been 4 or 5 years. If you want a job done properly...etc.

Have a read of the manual, it's not rocket science, just a bit fiddly.

Change the points its really straight forward. All in the BMC manual. Ive rebuilt a few and touch wood no problems. Besides a new pump would be too shiney for my engine bay.

One tip when you take the old points off count the number of turns to free the central screw then when you re do it count it back on this way you get the throw of the points .back to where it was saves a bit of messing about.Also take if off the car,about impossible if you try with it still fitted.There was a thread about this a while ago and some good advice there ,do a search .Good luck

The single and double ones seem to work just as well as each other as far as I can tell. They're interchangeable, so if you can find both then buy whichever is cheaper!

Job done, only problem was when one of the black internal wire ring terminals fell off.

Kennatt, counting the number of turns to free the central screw worked a treat.

Pump is working fine at the moment, hope it stays that way and I don't have to buy a new one.
