floor welding

Hi there
Been doing quite a bit of welding recently - both chassis legs in successfully as well as front cross member. I'm now welding in the driver's side floor and have hit a snag. On the photo can you see where the rear of the seat floor joins the existing metalwork. Anyone got any tips on how to hold this particular piece really close together - and indeed the floor to transmission tunnel - whilst I weld? The original metal is quite strong and springy!
thanks<br>

Self tapers?

Or pop rivets. You do get fancy devices like re-useable pop rivets - can't remember the name at the moment - I'm sure someone will come up with it in a minute. But pop rivets work well enough - just tack in between, and then remove them. The other option (and some will say better) is to butt the panels closely together with no overlap - you can secure them with magnets while you tack them up - or tags which you remove after welding. If the welding goes well - you can buff it all down and the join becomes 'invisible'.

Ive got a set of Very strong magnetic clamps, they worked very very well. So well it was a bit of a mission to get them off again......I did a bit of maths and found out they had a strength (flux density) of about 0.8 Tesla, which is a lot!!

Ah yes clecos, though the magnetic clamps sound excellent too. Thanks

We use self tappers, and I'd be wary of butt welding the floor, a slight overlap is a far stronger joint.and less prone to splitting with the movement of the seats and folk getting in and out.

I agree -I would overlap and weld both sides - but many others here insist that just forms rust traps and is 'not right'!
