Hi There , can anyone tell me how the wiper motor is fixed in position on a1954 series 11 . Its behind the dash in front of the steering wheel , but mine is wedged in with a piece of cardboard!! that cant be right .

On mine, the wiper was just sitting there, apparently on some rubber pads. However, closer inspection revealed that these were at one point fixed to the motor, and were screwed in from underneath, a bit like tiny engine mounts. I expect yours is the same.

Hi, Thanks for the message , there must be some bits missing on mine then . There is a rubber block on the top bolted to the frame but loose on the motor , and card board packing underneath !! Regards Phil

How do you remove the wiper motor in a splitscreen?

Mine seems to have given up, although there is a slow intermittent grinding noise from the motor, so i know its getting current.

How much do the early type motors differ from the newer enginebay mounted ones?

take out the right hand side dashboard cover and instruments, and it is in the right hand corner. Not had mine out, but descovered it when i removed the dash

I had it out this morning. Mine has a metal cage which is bolted to the underside of the dash. Ontop of this are three nuts holding the motor in position.

I had to remove the nut holding the driver side wiper stud, and pull it all out.

Not only being full of water, lots of loose bits of metal were inside, and the brush worn.

I cleaned it up, and cleaned out the 50 year old grease from the gear box. I replaced the grease using Lithium, but the manual suggests using Zinc oxide based. Should this cause a problem.

Anyway, putting it back together, it works better than it ever has. But it began to either smoke or steam. Im not sure which. But its probably due to the moisture inside.

Crumbs Andrew - you're not having much luck!
Firstly make sure it's fused corectly.

One of the common failure modes for motors is when they overheat. The coil windings have a non conductive coating which fails when hot - then the rotor wires short to each other. This reduces the effective number of rotor windings (and therefore reduces the back EMF) which
effectively reduces the resisitnce. That causes higher current flow, more heat... and it ends in meltdown.

So always be a bit suspicious if a motor 'smokes'., as it can end in wiring fires.

however, steam is also possible if the whole thing was wet, or the grease may have got somewhere it wasn't meant to.
