engine steady broken and 1098 heater valve mod

Hi I remember a few years ago someone did an improved engine steady - mine is broken and been welded, probably due to the engine mounts being perished (I just got the car). Anyone know of a better solution than the standard tie-bar?
Also when I had my previous 1098 minor van (about 10 yrs ago) I replaced the standard heater valve with an in-line valve from some kind of vauxhall, not sure which model but it worked better than the standard valve as it cut the heat off properly in the summer so you got a decent cold blast - anyone remember this mod?

cheers

I've got a Grumpys one. Not sure if they are available new still but you could easily make one....

The standard heater valve should be able to cut the flow off completely if the seal inside is good and (if it's the late type) the cable is adjusted properly.

Thanks psl, I have tried Grumpys but they have ceased trading, however I am now told that East Sussex Minors have taken over their stuff and they do the bar like yours in the pic so I have ordered one!

Re: the heater valve every Minor I have had seems to have a problem with this, the earlier valves with the tap seem to give no problem but you have to get out of the car to turn them on and off, the vauxhall whatever it was valve was great but I can't remember what model it was off. Think it might even have been a tip via the club at the time but it's a long time ago

I can answer that one for you it was the inline valve from the Chevette and its a plastic bodied one, if you want I will try and take a photo of one and post it up as I happen to have one somewhere, and no its not available before you ask.

I seem to remember reading in a back issue of minor matters that the fact you can not completly cut off the flow of water through your heater is no bad thing.

The theory was that by letting a small flow through, sediment was not able to build up and completly block the core... how true this is i have no idea.

Interesting that, I would have thought that if you had that much sediment in your engine and radiator its time for a good flush through and I dont see how it would block up if there was no flow when it was flowing before.

Better to keep FULL flow through the heater all year round. Good for heater and good for the engine too!

I think the ex-Grumpy kit is sold out. I may have got the last one. ESM sent me a mail a while ago saying they were going to re-introduce some of the Grumpy kits during the year. It is however easy enough to fabricate. I can measure it up if you want.
Image
Hi thanks guys well I guess there are not many vauxhall chevettes around now eh in scrappies which is where I got one from ten years or more ago. Just couldn't remember which model it was.

Re: the engine steady thanks for the kind offer to measure up but no need as ESM do have them in stock.

ESM has two different engine steady kits listed. The one you are looking for is the MNT146A not the MNT 146. It is marked "Sold out" as I have just checked their website. Suggest you ring them for confirmation to avoid surprises.
