coil change

I took mungo out for a spin and after 2 miles I turned the engine off, 2 min's later it wouldn't start, but after twenty mins it ran then for another 2 mile before stuttering and cutting out. there was fuel getting through, and just by luck this gentleman was passing in a moggy van, he stopped and had a look for me as on electrics i'm not too hot, he came to the conclusion that it was either 1 of 2 things. It was either the condensor overheating or the coil overheating, so I will replace both, but what I want to know is would a late coil fit / work on a '56 splitscreen and are the condensors all the same.
Would it be wise to take the coil off the dynamo and fit it to the inner wing so that it is upright or should I leave it where it is. My mot is this month and I don't want to break down on the way there. your valuable help would be most appreciated.

what I forgot to say is that my car was changed to neg' earth and the coil contacts changed accordingly.

Ahh - but now the condenser is working other way round! Try changing it first - it's much less money than a coil - and much more likely to be the culprit! Would be an idea to clean or renew the points too - and clean the points in the fuel pump.
