Twin carbs, Monaro Motors

Post by kotemaori »

The Monaro Motors twin carb set up is finally completed, it looks extra good and has had its praises sung. Next project is a Kleining high compression finned alloy head for both early and late Series MM's, patternmaking is underway, wallets are empty as a result.
Image
I have seen the set and taken some photos. The quality looks good.
Note that the kit does not include the carbs but does include the linkage.

Looks good! Out of interest how high compression is the planned head?

Finned high compression head

Post by kotemaori »

Alan, I am expecting about 7.6 CR on the head as it was originally designed, but intended to seek advice here when its time to machine them. I know that sounds low but the Series MM never lent itself to higher CR's, having a swirl problem. the mixture will tend to move to one side of the chamber if CR is too high. I expect most heads will be sold semi finished. Will add a photo when I get the sample back from the patternmaker. On the subject of heads, some members will be aware I have Auto CAD scans of a perfectly preserved ALTA head, no corrosion, at a cost of US$5,000, I have had a quote to make the moulds, a mininimum of AUD$50,000, that is before casting one single head, so it will be an expensive project to get off the ground. I notice that Austin 7 race engines move the sparkplug to a position over the exhaust valve to improve combustion. Might that be worth looking into?

Kleining heads

Post by kotemaori »

Hi Rob, I have had that info passed on to me by a local chap who races them, and also intend to investigate racing heads for sidevalve Ford V8's and 100E Fords, there will be an obvious solution somewhere, however CR will be restricted by the stick of celery strength in the rods, both little end and big end. Does anyone have recommendations for replacement valves, apart from the 1600 Ford Laser, Mazda 323 type.
