Wiring Problem

I've just converted from a dynamo to an alternator and now the mog ain't for starting - turns over fine but won't fire.

I suspect I've wired it up wrong and I'd like to confirm the solenoid connections. I've got a thick brown and thin brown wire from the alternator to the +ve side of the solenoid and a red wire running from the -ve side of the solenoid joined to a small wire coming out of the side of the distributor.

Is that correct?

P.S. The mogster has always been a top starter - no prevoius issues. Also checked the fuel pump and it's functioning normally so it's definitely not that.

It is wired wrongly. look in the electrial list and you will see a posting about 5 or 6 down from yours that has the correct wiring diagram.

Hello Greeners,

the distributor should not be connected to the solenoid, but to the coil.
The drawing above only shows the power side of the solenoid and as such does not have a +ve and -ve polarity as it is purely a switch. The small Lucar terminal on the solenoid is fed from the ignition switch when it is in the 'start' position (white\red wire) which is not shown in the above drawing.

Looks like the coil has packed in. I've sourced a replacement so hopefully I'll be back on the road in no time!

If you had it wired directly to the battery - I'm not surprised! Have you had a meter on it ?
Still don't understand what you had done to the wiring - how did the 'solenoid' get involved - and it doesn't have a '-ve' connection anyway!
